Anytime Algorithm

✍️ Spec Review: Dixl Architecture Committee • 📅 Updated: October 22, 2026 • ⏱️ Reading: ~3 min

An anytime algorithm is an algorithmic paradigm that can return a valid, suboptimal solution to a computational problem even if interrupted prematurely, and whose solution quality monotonically improves as a function of allocated computation time or resource expenditure. Formally, let S be the quality of a solution returned at execution time t. An anytime algorithm guarantees that for any two execution times t_1 and t_2 where t_1 < t_2, the solution quality satisfies Quality(t_1) <= Quality(t_2), converging asymptotically to the optimal solution Quality(opt) as t approaches infinity.

HOW-TO IMPLEMENT & CONFIGURE

📋 Prerequisites & Environment:

  • Runtime Environment: Modern C++17 or higher (supporting std::chrono and std::future for interruptible execution threads).
  • Development Tools: CMake 3.15+, GCC 9+ or Clang 10+ with sanitizers enabled.
  • Hardware Constraints: Multi-core CPU environment with predictable context-switching latency for cooperative interruption.
STEP 1

Step 1

Establish the execution harness separating the core solver from the real-time deadline monitor. Define abstract interfaces for interruptible states and quality metrics.

#include <chrono>
#include <atomic>
#include <functional>
#include <optional>
#include <iostream>

template <typename Solution>
class AnytimeSolverBase {
protected:
    std::atomic<bool> cancel_flag_{false};
public:
    virtual ~AnytimeSolverBase() = default;
    virtual void interrupt() { cancel_flag_.store(true, std::memory_order_relaxed); }
    virtual std::optional<Solution> solve(std::chrono::milliseconds timeout) = 0;
};
STEP 2

Step 2

Implement an iterative deepening or stochastic local search variant (such as Anytime A* or Iterative Improvement) that checks the cancellation token at micro-intervals.

#include <vector>
#include <algorithm>
#include <thread>

struct RouteSolution {
    double cost;
    std::vector<int> path;
    bool operator>(const RouteSolution& other) const { return cost > other.cost; }
};

class TravelingSalesmanAnytime : public AnytimeSolverBase<RouteSolution> {
private:
    std::vector<std::vector<double>> distance_matrix_;

    RouteSolution local_search_iteration(const RouteSolution& current, int depth) {
        // Simulated stochastic improvement step
        RouteSolution next = current;
        if (next.path.size() > 2) {
            std::random_shuffle(next.path.begin() + 1, next.path.end());
            // Recalculate cost omitted for brevity
        }
        return next;
    }

public:
    explicit TravelingSalesmanAnytime(std::vector<std::vector<double>> matrix)
        : distance_matrix_(std::move(matrix)) {}

    std::optional<RouteSolution> solve(std::chrono::milliseconds timeout) override {
        auto start_time = std::chrono::steady_clock::now();
        RouteSolution best_solution{1e9, {0, 1, 2, 3}};
        RouteSolution current = best_solution;

        while (!cancel_flag_.load(std::memory_order_relaxed)) {
            auto elapsed = std::chrono::duration_cast<std::chrono::milliseconds>(
                std::chrono::steady_clock::now() - start_time);
            if (elapsed >= timeout) break;

            current = local_search_iteration(current, 1);
            if (current.cost < best_solution.cost) {
                best_solution = current;
            }

            // Yield execution context to prevent CPU starvation
            std::this_thread::yield();
        }
        return best_solution;
    }
};
STEP 3

Step 3

Construct assertions verifying monotonicity across variable execution epochs. Validate that a shorter time budget never yields a strictly worse solution than a longer budget under deterministic seeds.

#include <cassert>

void verify_monotonicity() {
    std::vector<std::vector<double>> matrix = {{0, 1}, {1, 0}};
    TravelingSalesmanAnytime solver(matrix);

    auto short_res = solver.solve(std::chrono::milliseconds(5));
    auto long_res = solver.solve(std::chrono::milliseconds(50));

    assert(short_res.has_value() && "Short timeout must return a valid solution");
    assert(long_res.has_value() && "Long timeout must return a valid solution");
    assert(long_res->cost <= short_res->cost && "Anytime monotonicity violated: longer run yielded worse cost");
}

int main() {
    verify_monotonicity();
    std::cout << "All anytime verification tests passed successfully.n";
    return 0;
}
STEP 4

Step 4

Mitigate priority inversion, thread contention on volatile shared memory, and garbage collection pauses in managed runtimes. Ensure atomic flag reads use appropriate memory fences.

// Use std::memory_order_relaxed for high-frequency loop interruption checks
// to eliminate cache-coherency ping-pong overhead across CPU cores.
inline bool should_abort(const std::atomic<bool>& flag) {
    return flag.load(std::memory_order_relaxed);
}
